For the protection of children: "Wheel stands, child walks".

Because dangerous incidents still regularly occur on the way to school, the start of school in 2017 will once again be dominated by the well-known road safety campaign "Bike stops, child walks". Children learn to cross the road only when the wheels of the vehicle stand still.

Just in time for the start of school in 2017, the TCS, the bfu - Advisory Council for Accident Prevention and the police, in cooperation with municipalities and schools, are once again launching the successful "Rad steht, Kind geht" (bike stops, child walks) campaign. According to the bfu, 42 % of the children who are actively involved in the Traffic participating children between the ages of 5 and 14 who have serious or even fatal accidents at the time of the accident on the School route.

Children can estimate speeds and distances more poorly

Because children cannot correctly judge the speed and distance of vehicles, they learn at school not to cross a pedestrian crossing until the vehicle has stopped. Against this background, even hand signals and flashing lights can confuse children when a vehicle is still rolling slightly. It is therefore important to make motorized road users aware of this issue and to get them not just to slow down at pedestrian crossings, but to stop completely.

The campaign has been carried out with broad media presence since 2015 and, according to a representative survey, is perceived and understood by over 90 % of motorists.

80,000 free safety vests for first graders

The TCS is also committed to ensuring children's safety on the roads outside of this campaign, in close cooperation with its sections and the local authorities. That is why more than 80,000 free safety vests will again be distributed to first-graders throughout Switzerland in 2017.
