Leurs fonctions sont d'une importance capitale pour la vie, si bien qu'on les trouve dans toutes les cellules des plantes, des animaux et des hommes. Les microtubules peuvent atteindre plusieurs microm\u00e8tres de long, ce qui correspond \u00e0 peu pr\u00e8s \u00e0 l'\u00e9paisseur d'un cheveu humain moyen.<\/p>\n<p>La structure tubulaire des microtubules est constitu\u00e9e d'un agencement r\u00e9gulier de deux \u00e9l\u00e9ments de construction, appel\u00e9s tubulines (\u03b1-tubuline et \u03b2-tubuline). Dans une cellule saine, de nouveaux microtubules sont constamment form\u00e9s et d\u00e9truits \u00e0 partir de ces \u00e9l\u00e9ments constitutifs. Ce processus est contr\u00f4l\u00e9 par de nombreux m\u00e9canismes, notamment par ce que l'on appelle le cycle tubuline-tyrosine. L'acide amin\u00e9 tyrosine est alors soit fix\u00e9 \u00e0 l'\u03b1-tubuline, soit coup\u00e9 de celle-ci.<\/p>\n<p>Les enzymes qui lient la tyrosine \u00e0 la \u03b1-tubuline sont connues depuis longtemps. Sans ces enzymes, les cellules nerveuses du cerveau ne peuvent pas se connecter correctement.
