Fresh air for alert minds
Good indoor air in a classroom has a positive effect on the ability to concentrate and thus on the performance of the students. In a study, the Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH) shows that the air quality is insufficient in around two-thirds of schools. With a ventilation plan, the situation can already be significantly improved.
Schoolrooms are used intensively; usually many people stay in them at the same time and for several hours. When they exhale and sweat, they release thousands of different substances into the indoor air, including carbon dioxide (CO2). These substances, such as organic compounds, accumulate during class time, decreasing the quality of the indoor air. If the indoor air quality is too poor, this has an effect on the Ability to concentrate of the students out. They feel tired or have headaches. Their performance decreases.
An important indicator for the air quality in the classroom is the CO2 content. It increases proportionally to the other substances and thus forms a reliable indicator of the overall pollution of indoor air caused by people. Over a period of two years, the FOPH, in collaboration with the competent authorities in the cantons of Bern, Vaud and Grisons, measured the air quality of 100 schoolrooms. The results showed that in about two thirds of the schools the air quality during lessons was insufficient.
Under the motto "fresh air for alert minds", the BAG Information material for the ventilation of classrooms has been prepared. It is aimed at students, teachers and building professionals. With systematic and efficient window ventilation, the air in the classroom can be improved quickly. As a general rule, windows should be opened wide during all breaks and before the first morning and afternoon lesson.
