In fiscal year 2019, the Gebäudeversicherung Kanton Zürich (GVZ) saw a decline in both the number of fire claims and natural hazards. In total, GVZ recorded 2,838 claims (Previous year9,729), of which 1,052 were fire claims and 1,786 natural hazards. Fire claims totaled 31.3 million francs (previous year: 55.2 million francs), while natural hazards claims amounted to about 6 million francs (previous year: 48.1 million francs), according to the media release. The estimated total loss of 37.3 million francs was down 66 million francs, or about two-thirds, from the previous year, it said.

In 2018, the storm "Burglind," several severe thunderstorms over the Zurich lowlands and the major fire near Zurich's main train station led to a marked increase in the loss amount. There were no such major events in the past fiscal year, GVZ said.
