Exercise with trucks at the Beznau nuclear power plant

Today, emergency personnel from the federal government, the army and the Beznau nuclear power plant (AG) are practising the transportation of emergency material. This involves transporting various loads from the Reitnau (AG) storage facility to the nuclear power plant and placing them at different drop-off points on the nuclear power plant site. Noise pollution for the population is kept to a minimum.

In an emergency, the transportation of radiation protection material, generators, pumps or fuel could be used to supplement the emergency material already available on the Beznau nuclear power plant site. This additional material for emergency protection is stored jointly by all Swiss nuclear power plant operators in Reitnau and transported to the nuclear power plants by army truck or helicopter as part of regular exercises.

On March 3, 2026, army trucks bring various loads to the Beznau nuclear power plant as part of an exercise. There, they will be placed at predefined deployment points on the plant site for training purposes. Similar exercises are carried out regularly with all operating nuclear power plants in Switzerland.

This exercise serves as a supplementary exercise in preparation for the full-scale emergency exercise that will take place again this fall. Full-scale emergency exercises are carried out every two years under the direction of the Federal Office for Civil Protection (FOCP) and review the emergency response throughout Switzerland in the event of an assumed serious incident at a nuclear power plant, including cooperation between the federal government, cantons, operators, the army and other partners.
