Most popular "flower": the 50-euro bill

In Germany, police recorded around 60,800 counterfeit crimes in 2014, almost 60% more than in 2013 (around 38,300 cases). In almost 60,000 of these cases, euro notes were counterfeited and distributed, as recently reported by the Federal Criminal Police Office in Germany.

A total of just under 76,000 counterfeit euro notes with a face value of €5.3 million were detected in Germany. Despite the increased number of cases, the volume of counterfeit money continues to be low compared with the volume of around 6.8 billion banknotes in circulation in Germany.

The preferred counterfeit is the 50-euro banknote. With a share of over 45% (34,448 counterfeits), it ranks first among the counterfeit euro notes registered in Germany last year.

The €20 banknote follows in second place with a share of just under 32%. The professionally produced and distributed counterfeits come from Eastern and Southern Europe, primarily Italy.

Counterfeit money is increasingly being distributed by organized groups and sold on the Internet on illegal trading platforms. The Internet is also used to offer counterfeit holograms, which are placed in particular on counterfeit 50-euro notes, thus enhancing the value of these forgeries.

In the course of police investigations, it was found that young offenders in particular are increasingly obtaining counterfeit money via the Internet and subsequently distributing it. In this context, the BKA points out that counterfeiting offenses are not trivial offenses, but can result in sentences of imprisonment.

In the EU member states as a whole, the volume of counterfeit euro banknotes increased by 216 percent compared with the previous year. The European Central Bank registered 1,650,479 counterfeit euro banknotes with a face value of around 93.5 million euros. This sharp increase is due in particular to large-scale police seizures in Italy and Romania.

Further details, for example on the detection of counterfeit money or on the volume of counterfeit coins in 2014, as well as the situation reports of the past few years, are here (under Annual Reports & Situation Reports).

Digital patient file for tablet and smartphone

Swisscom is working with the German company Xonion to develop a digital patient record for mobile devices for use in hospitals. Digital patient files would ensure both better data quality and efficiency in the hospital as well as more satisfied patients and employees.

Index cards register

The two companies are developing a digital patient record for tablet and smartphone - the Medical Record App. The solution is a system-independent app that simplifies documentation for doctors and nursing staff thanks to its input capability and intuitive forms.

With Swisscom Medical Record, all hospital staff involved in the treatment process have fast access to patient files from any location. The solution can be connected to all existing hospital information systems. With a single click, doctors can view and record all patient data, from the patient's medical history to current laboratory values and medication, directly at the patient's bedside. The app can also be used offline, which is particularly interesting for affiliated physicians.

A second advantage of the solution is a form designer that allows the app to be adapted quickly and easily to the user's own needs and to integrate department-specific documentation. In addition, speech recognition facilitates text input. The app currently runs on the iOS operating system and thus works on iPods, iPhones, iPads and the Apple Watch. Other operating systems will follow, Swisscom said.

 Medical data quality improved

The basic solution is already in place and is now being finalized in co-creation with specialists from various hospitals. The solution will improve the quality of medical documentation and thus also the outcome of treatment. Thanks to the ability to view up-to-date data at any time, not only patient satisfaction but also the satisfaction of hospital staff is increased.

Swisscom Medical Records will be available on the market from 2016. According to the announcement, hospitals will pay per user account and month. The aim is also to seamlessly combine the app with the evita patient dossier and Swisscom's data exchange platform.

Nanomaterials: What regulations are needed?

What regulations are necessary and sensible with regard to nanomaterials? This question was discussed by representatives of the German-speaking countries at the 9th International Nano Authorities Dialogue in Vaduz.

Nanomaterials are becoming increasingly ubiquitous.
Nanomaterials are becoming increasingly ubiquitous.

Nanomaterials have numerous interesting applications, for example in coatings or in medicine. However, due to their special properties, they can pose a risk to humans, animals and plants.

At the 9th International Nano Authorities Dialogue in Vaduz, representatives of authorities, researchers and companies from Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Liechtenstein will discuss which regulations are needed for nanomaterials in order to protect humans and the environment from harmful influences.

A "Roadmap 2020" for the regulation of nanomaterials was outlined at the meeting. Various jointly supported measures for the safe and sustainable handling of nanomaterials were evaluated by the stakeholders.

The results of the Nano Authorities Dialogue form the basis for further discussion of the need for regulatory action at national and European level. The 10th International Nano Authorities Dialogue will take place in Switzerland in spring 2016 at the invitation of the Federal Office for the Environment (FOEN).

Knowledge around the GHS

Since the beginning of June, new chemical products may only be labeled with the new hazard symbols. The federal government supports with information material around the new regulation.

The complete changeover to the new product labeling is taking place in Switzerland in stages. It is already well advanced at the major distributors. However, products already manufactured with the old labeling may still be sold until the end of May 2017.

For companies as well as the population are available under www.cheminfo.ch (d) or www.infochim.ch (f/i) brochures, fact sheets, learning materials, educational films, and flyers available for download or order. A free app for smartphones was also launched. Among other things, the app "cheminfo" provides information on the new symbols and contains an emergency call-145 function that can be activated in the event of poisoning accidents and suspected poisoning. This sends the emergency call to the Tox Info Suisse center, where medical information is provided free of charge around the clock.

ZuKo, already at that time on the Musegg wall

This year's Siaxma customer event began with a tour of the Lucerne Business Park. There, the company has converted and expanded the existing access control system.

At Siaxma's customer event.

The unmistakable blue Business Park Luzern building with its 11,000 m2 of office and storage space allows for a variety of uses, which requires an adaptable access system. One of the ways the installation was converted from a single-tenant solution with five readers and high security requirements to an "open" system with many tenants and over 30 readers was by linking online and offline components. With the same badge, building users will also be able to use the copier, pay in the canteen and, in the foreseeable future, operate the elevators.

The importance of clarifying needs and careful planning before purchasing an access control system was Max Keller's main message to his customers. Siaxma-customers. He based his remarks on the Business dossier "Evaluation of an Access Control System", which can be obtained from the Swiss Association of Security System Installers SES in Zollikofen, and here as PDF is available for download. There are so many different systems and approaches to solutions that early consultation with specialists and detailed questionnaires and checklists is highly recommended. According to Keller, the involvement of employees, official requirements and data protection are often forgotten.

The guided tour of the famous Lucerne Musegg Wall dating back to the 13th century was not part of the supporting program by chance: The fortification with its original 30 towers ultimately served to protect against unwanted intruders and thus to control access.
