Seven steps to a desired security budget

A requested security budget from the IT department doesn't always stand a chance of getting in front of management. A guide helps.

How can I convince the management of the security budget?

According to Pricewaterhouse Coopers, there were 48 million registered security incidents worldwide last year, with some of the damage caused running into billions. But the security budget requested to ward off such incidents does not always stand a chance with management. That's why the company WatchGuard Technologies has developed a Guide It is intended to support IT managers in anchoring the topic at management level. A better understanding of the security requirements on the part of the financial decision-makers is the most important prerequisite for initiating measures to implement a security concept, emphasizes the network security specialist.

The guide defines a total of seven steps on the way to the desired security budget and provides concrete recommendations for action at each individual stage. For example, it shows how a company's individual security needs can be determined and what options are available for uncovering potential security gaps in the company's own network. In addition, IT managers will find tips on how to present the current situation and possible courses of action to management.

More and more people work flexibly

Flexible working hours continue to increase in Switzerland.

Flexibility at work is becoming increasingly important in Switzerland.
Flexibility at work is becoming increasingly important in Switzerland.

Just under half of employees (44.6%) had flexible working hours in 2014. This is reported by the Federal Statistical Office BfS. In the last survey in 2004, the figure was only 41.7%. The flexible models range from weekly or monthly working hours to annual working hours to working hours without any formal requirements at all. Men are more likely than women to be employed in such a model (51.1% compared to 37.6%), and people with a university or college degree are significantly more likely than those without post-compulsory education (62.3% compared to 17.9%).

Part-time work is also on the rise. Today, 36% of the workforce are employed on a part-time basis, compared with 31.7% in 2004. Here, the difference between the sexes is particularly pronounced: For men, the figure is only 15.9%, while for women it is 59.2%.

People also work at weekends and at night: For example, more than one-fifth of those in employment work regularly on Saturdays and around one in ten on Sundays. Every twentieth person also regularly works at night.

Guide for IT Managers

A new guide helps IT managers to get their desired security budget through to management.

In addition, IT managers will find helpful tips on how to best present the current situation and possible courses of action to management.

According to WatchGuard, the guide is intended to guide the user through the evaluation process and help to question the status quo of the existing protection measures. What's more, the aim is to weigh up the economic consequences of potentially exploiting the identified vulnerabilities and thus accelerate corresponding budget decisions to improve the situation.

WatchGuard's chief financial officer, Richard Barber, has a few recommendations in store for IT pros when they need to represent their particular financial needs to senior management:

  • Find out to what extent the technical understanding of your counterpart is pronounced and align your presentation accordingly.
  • Find out where there are further investment needs in the company that may compete with the security budget.
  • Draw attention to the sometimes far-reaching economic consequences of a security incident.
  • Provide several solution scenarios to choose from - including an assessment of the respective chances of success and impact of a hacker attack as well as the costs for implementing individual security measures.

Support for investigators

Systran, which is active in translation technology, and Sinequa, with its platform for real-time Big Data search and analysis, are cooperating in the field of military intelligence, electronic investigations and cyber defense.

Translated into more than 45 languages.
Translated into more than 45 languages.

The goal of the collaboration is to create a reference solution in the field of critical information detection and processing from any source in multiple languages, according to the two vendors. They describe the added value of the partnership as follows: On the one hand, securely shielded and in more than 45 languages translated on the other hand, there is a Big Data Platform available to analyze, extract and categorize relevant information in real time. The integration of the two solutions, he says, makes it possible to quickly process structured and unstructured data from very different internal and external sources (websites, audio transcripts, social media, etc.) and provide investigators with a comprehensive overview of a subject.

Today, defense and security actors would face not only traditional threats (military conflicts, terrorism, etc.) but also newer threats such as cyber attacks, piracy, drug trafficking or natural disasters. Both types of threats can be detected by analyzing information freely available on the Internet.

The international dimension of the threats, the diversity of languages and dialects to be processed, and the lack of experts in the field of Middle Eastern languages make collection and analysis much more difficult, the two companies stress. This is where their services come in, they say.

Hitachi Zosen Inova (HZI), formerly Von Roll Inova, is presented with the Safety Award of the Engineering Construction Industry Association (ECIA) award. The British organization honors companies that can demonstrate a consistently above-average standard of occupational health and safety.

HZI is a specialist in thermal energy recovery from waste, including the construction of Kompogas plants around the world. The company has met ECIA's stringent requirements with a company-wide strategy on health, safety and the environment. This aims to completely prevent accidents worldwide.

To achieve this, the company relies on the three pillars of competence, compliance and community: A core team ensures clear instructions, technical procedures and responsibility, and also simplifies processes , so that every employee can do their job safely. In addition, HZI requires the same minimum health, safety and environmental standards to be met worldwide - this is verified through audits. Last but not least, the company obliges its management members to actively support and exemplify this strategy.

New regulations for work in positive pressure

The Federal Council approves the revised ordinance on safety when working in positive pressure.

Work in positive pressure, for example under water, is newly regulated.

The previous regulation on the subject of work in positive pressure, for example construction work in compressed air or diving work, is already over 50 years old. It therefore no longer meets current occupational safety requirements in many respects.

The Federal Council has therefore commissioned a revision of the ordinance. This is now ready and was approved by the Federal Council in its meeting on April 15. It will come into force on January 1, 2016.

The new ordinance takes particular account of advances in technology and occupational medicine. It is available on the federal website for Download available.

Almost three years after the opening of the branch in Zurich West, the award for best employer in the category "Small Companies" for Rackspace represents a great success, especially as the company. Marco Schmid, Country Manager of the D-A-CH region, is overwhelmed: "I am incredibly proud of our team, which makes an unbelievable effort every day and thus plays a decisive role in this success. Our positive corporate culture not only helps to ensure that talented employees remain loyal to the company in the long term. It is a key factor in attracting new talent to the company."

Rackspace is characterized by a transparent, trusting and exceptionally open communication culture. The family atmosphere, characterized by a Swiss culture in an international environment, sets the Zurich offices apart. Commercial register receives central database

The Swiss Commercial Register is refreshed.

Should work with a central database in the future - the Swiss Commercial Register Office.
Should work with a central database in the future - the Swiss Commercial Register Office.

The Federal Council wants to modernize the commercial register so that it can continue to fulfill its important function in the service of security and efficiency of legal transactions. This has been the Federal Department of Justice and Police (FDJP) recently communicated.

Since 1937, the provisions on the commercial register in the Code of Obligations have not been comprehensively revised. Five years ago, the Federal Commission of Experts on the Commercial Register drew up a "vision" and came to the conclusion that modernization was necessary.

AHV no. as identifier

The AHV insurance number will now also be systematically used to identify natural persons in the commercial register, as is already planned for other registers under private law. This permanent personal identifier improves the register management, in particular thanks to the quality and timeliness of the personal data, writes the FDJP.

Until now, personal data has been recorded decentrally in the respective cantonal commercial register databases. For this reason, it is not possible today to determine on a nationwide basis which natural person is entered in the commercial register in which function or with which signing authority at various legal entities. The creation of a central database is intended to remedy this situation.

Facilitation for societies

The Federal Council's bill also provides for simplifications for companies. According to the FDJP, the "Stampa declaration" as a separate document is to be abolished. This declaration serves, in particular, when a corporation is entered in the commercial register as confirmation that there are no contributions in kind, acquisitions in kind, offsetting items or special benefits other than those specified in the documents. The assignment of shares in a limited liability company between shareholders will also be partially exempt from formal requirements, according to the statement.

According to the FDJP, the comprehensive revision of the commercial register law strengthens legality, legal equality and clarity. Important contents of the current Commercial Register Ordinance of October 17, 2007 would be anchored in the Code of Obligations.

The Federal Council has just adopted a dispatch on the amendment of the regulations on the commercial register.

With vital value measurement against burnout?

Stress sufferers are to learn how to cope better with stressful situations thanks to an intelligent chest strap.

Detect stress before it's too late - heart rate variability should tell.
Detect stress before it's too late - heart rate variability should tell.

How stressed am I actually in everyday life? What influences my stress level?

Anyone who wants to answer these questions can do so in the future with a new gadget - and should even prevent burnout in the long term.

The Vital Monitor from the Austrian startup Pulse7 uses a chest strap to measure the ECG and calculate heart rate variability (HRV). This is the human organism's ability to change the frequency of its heart rhythm - for example, to beat faster during exertion.

The user measures his current HRV in the morning. The measurement can be repeated several times a day. An app and a web tool analyze the data and calculate the current state of regeneration, the stress level and the individual biological age.

A one-time measurement is not yet very meaningful, because whether values are good or bad depends primarily on the individual. But if the measurements are taken over a longer period of time, the result is a longer-term trend that can be very meaningful, according to the company.

The user should thus be able to recognize overload situations and learn to counteract his increased stress level in good time - for example with a short walk or relaxation exercises.

90% more jogging accidents

The sport of running is booming - but the number of jogging accidents has also increased significantly.

The number of jogging accidents has almost doubled in the last 15 years.

Today, almost twice as many joggers have accidents as at the turn of the millennium. Suva's latest analyses show when running athletes have accidents and how the accident risk differs compared to the past.

The sport of running is booming. The report "Sport Schweiz 2014" published by the Federal Office of Sport shows that almost a quarter of the Swiss population goes jogging. Accident insurers currently register around 9,000 jogging accidents each year. The cost: 30 million Swiss francs per year. Since the year 2000, jogging accidents have increased by 90%; among women, the number has almost tripled.

"The risk of having an accident while jogging today is hardly any different than in the past," says Peter Andermatt, a statistician at Suva. Rather, he says, the increase in the number of accidents is due to the fact that significantly more people are jogging. Today, it is generally known that regular exercise and sport have a positive effect on health. People who get enough exercise are generally more resilient, more productive and generally have a lower risk of accidents.

Slipping and sliding is the most common cause of accidents among running athletes. Most often, joggers sprain their ankles. According to Walter Vogt, a specialist in surgery at Suva, even a sprained ligament can be painful for a long time.

In the case of a torn ligament, the pain is accompanied by rapid swelling and a bruise below the outer ankle. Until a torn ligament has healed after six weeks at the earliest, these athletes can no longer jog. "The best prescription against such injuries is targeted strength and balance training, warming up before jogging, and good running shoes."

Suva offers detailed running tips for joggers.

"The risk of having an accident while jogging today is hardly any different compared to the past," says Peter Andermatt, a statistician at Suva.
